Whether you have a business that is based out of your home, or if you want to maximize your efforts at your job, there are 3 basic concepts that will ensure your success.

By learning about and embracing these 3 simple – and free – success techniques you will not only increase your productivity, but you will maintain your sanity as well!

Scheduling

Yes, you are busy. Everyone is busy these days. From stay at home parents who raise children full-time, all the way up through CEO’s of billion-dollar companies, everyone is busy. However, everyone has the same 24 hours every day to get things done, so keep that in mind if you have the habit of thinking that your situation is different from anyone else’s.

When it comes to scheduling all of the things that are on your daily or weekly to-do list, writing down the master list of things that you want to accomplish is the absolutely mission-critical first step.

The reason why writing down everything on your to-do list is so important is because until you write it down, you probably don’t have a true grasp over just how many things you are trying to do every day!

Write down every single thing that you do that takes even 5 minutes of your time. Your list could include – but will hardly be limited to – things such as:

Personal – Sleep schedule, taking breaks, practicing personal hygiene, eating, talking on the phone, dealing with children, spending time with your family, running errands, surfing the Internet, exercising, etc.

Professional – Daily and weekly work tasks, answering email, product development, marketing, research, taking care of your website, tending to customer service, going to meetings, travel time, dealing with other employees, etc.

Once you have your list of things that you need to get done every day or every week, then you need take a REALISTIC look at how much time you have to dedicate to each of those activities.

Realism

It is critical that you write down how much time you actually spend on each of your tasks. Don’t set yourself up for failure by underestimating how time much you truly spend on the things that you do regularly.

For example, if you actually spend 4 hours per day reading and replying to email, but you find that number shocking, don’t schedule only 2 hours per day to work on email.

If your travel time is 60 minutes of actual driving, but then also includes a 30-minute window in the morning and again in the evening during which you get back and forth to your car, start up or shut down your work area, chit-chat with other employees, etc., then you have to include that in your schedule.

Being realistic about the many things that take up time everyday is the hardest part for most people. We find it difficult to believe that out of an 8 or 10-hour work day, that so much of that time is spent NOT working, so we tend to mentally block out the things that are not productive.

Here is the thing to remember, though: Whether you are being productive or not, the clock is still ticking. You might be amazed at how much time you spend each day NOT accomplishing the tasks that are in front of you.

Perseverance

Scheduling your time and being realistic about how long it takes to get things done is only the beginning. Realizing that you have many things to do every day and that you could clean up your productivity habits is simply not enough to effect change.

You have to consistently “stick to your guns” and follow through on whatever plans you come up with in order to increase your productivity.

If you are going to leave your house 30 minutes earlier in order to beat the traffic rush, only doing so occasionally is not going to net you any serious amount of additional time over the long-term.

Avoiding chatty co-workers in the break room one day, but carrying on a 20-minute conversation with them the next day is only going to serve to cancel out your efforts.

At home, avoiding the home-based distractions every Monday and Tuesday, but then slacking on your resolve to be more productive by the end of the week will not allow you the cumulative benefits of your efforts.

Regardless of what systems that you put in place in order to increase your productivity, follow the 3 basic rules that were just mentioned, and you will achieve long-term success:

Schedule your time, be realistic about what you have to do each day and how long it takes, and stick to a good plan of action to start increasing your productivity. Not only will these habits increase your productivity, but they will also increase your success in life!

Have your employees called in sick to work lately because they have a “slipped” or “ruptured” disc in the back? Have they complained that their back “went out” and that they have a burning pain centered in the lower back? Or have they complained of a shooting pain that begins in the buttocks and goes down the back of one leg?

Chances are your employees have complained to you about a herniated disc especially in the lower back. Low back pain will affect 4 out 5 people during their lifetime. In fact over 20 million Americans suffer from back pain caused by the derangement of an inter-vertebral disk.

Back injuries cause 100 million lost days of work annually and costs businesses as much as $100 billion every year.

After the common cold, back pain is the second most common cause that Americans call in sick from work. It is one of the most frequent causes of hospitalization and the third most common reason to undergo a surgical procedure.

Lower back pain and herniated discs account for 15% of sick leaves. One-fifth of all workers compensation claims are due to low back pain. In comparison to other medical conditions, it causes the greatest loss of productivity.

So, how can you treat back pain and increase you productivity?

When it comes to treating herniated discs, most employees will use traditional treatments such as ice/heat, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory medications and even surgery. While these may deliver some relief, it will usually be temporary if at all.

The major problem with these traditional treatments is that they only address the symptoms of a herniated disc. They do not address the actual cause of the problem. For example, even if your employees were to have invasive surgery and get some pain relief, the fact is the root cause that caused the disc to become herniated in the first place is still there.

There is what I call the hidden cause, it is over looked by most and it is simply this…

Our bodies adapt and change to our environment and this adaptation will over time cause what are called Muscle Imbalances. Those imbalances will cause what are called postural dysfunctions.

If the dysfunctions are not addressed, they will continue to place uneven pressure and strain on the discs and sooner or later your employees will likely have another problem with that disc, or others. This means more absenteeism, higher costs, and further deterioration in your company’s productivity,

To eliminate worker absenteeism related to back pain and herniated discs and increase productivity your employees must learn to identify and address the underlying cause of their problem.

Unfortunately, most doctors, chiropractors and physical therapists don’t spend time or focus on identifying the physical dysfunctions that are responsible for the condition. So most employees jump from one useless traditional treatment to the next and suffer with continuous herniated disc flare-ups for months or years unnecessarily.

Here Are 3 Ways to Identify and Address the Underlying Causes of Your Employee’s Back Problems So You Can Cut Costs & Improve Productivity:

1. Understand how job function causes back pain: Sitting, Standing and doing repetitive motions all day long will cause, muscle imbalances. Over time this will cause postural dysfunctions that will cause your spine to go into abnormal curvature. This will cause a disc to herniated…

2. Take postural assessment photos: The most persuasive evidence you can show your employees that they are developing postural dysfunction and will over time put themselves at risk for back pain is to take photos. Photograph your employees from the front and from the side. When assessing the photos some things to look for are:

- Are the shoulders level?

- Are the hips level?

- Is the head inline with the shoulders?

- Is the trunk forward or backward of the knees?

- Do you see twisting in the trunk?

3. Hire a professional for the day: Have a qualified professional come to your office. This person should be a Manual Physical Therapist or Personal Trainer trained to assess your posture and design a corrective program.

Understanding back pain and taking action are two totally different animals. No one thinks that it will happen to them. And because it takes so long for our bodies to reach the point of pain, almost no one takes action to prevent back pain. So if back pain is an issue at your work place you should incorporate an incentive based program… one that encourages education and consistent action.

You spend so much time at work. Your office environment should be your sanctuary. A retreat that inspires and energises you – but it rarely is.

How do you feel when you sit down at your desk every day?

Is your office chair uncomfortable, causing you irritating little aches? By 10am are you feeling sleepy, drab, slightly depressed and unmotivated? Are you busy thinking of yet another reason to escape your claustrophobic cage (even just for a few minutes)?

You’re not alone. According to a recent Microsoft Hardware Poll, over 89% of employees acknowledged office space design had a direct effect on their productivity. But often we don’t notice. And subtly, our office space drains our energy – controlling who we become at work.

So, let’s eradicate petty annoyances. Change your office into positive energy – and love the place you work. Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Redesign your office space

Nothing is worse than a cramped and cluttered office. Minimise your furniture. This will unblock trapped energy so that it flows freely around the room. And do you feel on edge every time someone enters the room behind you? Rearrange so that you have a good view of the doorway – you’ll feel in control and more relaxed. And how about your focus, are you staring at a blank wall all day? You’ll gain more inspiration if you can gaze out a light-filled window.

Deal with any scattered stashes of paperwork. Looking at these first thing in the morning will have you overwhelmed and stressed in the blink of an eye. Keep your surfaces clear. This will allow you to remain focused on the task at hand.

2. Revitalise your office space

Brighten up your area naturally. You may need to get rid of glaring fluorescent lights. Use natural lighting where possible, or layered lighting – consider combining overhead lights with soft lamp lighting.

It isn’t good working in such an artificial atmosphere. We are, after all, creatures of nature. Bring the outside in. Introduce some leafy plants, a fruit bowl, or a maybe even a goldfish in a bowl. Make sure your space circulates with fresh air – open a window, or leave a fan on. Breathing in fresh energy will enliven and motivate you.

What about any noises that aggravate you? That insistent humming water filter – fix it today!

3. Personalise your office space

Spice up your area. Accessorise. Add your own personal touch so you feel comfortable and at home. A splash of red, orange or yellow will motivate you. Or maybe you would prefer a hint of blue to clear your head during busy hours. Define yourself with some personal photos, candles or your favourite trinkets – these will ground you before a stressful meeting.

4. Ergonomics in your office space

Don’t forget about ergonomics. Are you squinting at the computer screen? Tilt the screen slightly or adjust its brightness. And the less twisting and turning in your office environment – the better! Put your current job folders and stationary all within an easy arm’s reach.

Organise your professional office space consultation today!

Do you want to know more? For a professional office space consultation, contact us today.

But do yourself and your business a favour – make these small but important changes. Your office environment will transform into an inviting haven which radiates energy. Not only will your employees achieve more in their work-day, they will feel happier and healthier. With higher productivity and appreciative customers – it can only be a win-win situation!

Mastering the E in Productive—Equilibrium

Work and family balance is a hot topic in organizations today. Balance is tough to achieve, because employees have a real commitment to their jobs and to their families. They love their work lives and their personal lives, often with equal vigor, and dont want to give up either. But many professionals find it difficult to participate fully in one area without sacrificing the other.
